What a powder room is — and why it matters
A powder room is a small bathroom with a toilet and a basin — no shower, no bath. It is the bathroom guests use. It is the room visitors judge the house by, even if they never see the master bathroom or the ensuite.
Because it is small (typically 1 to 2 square metres), every choice is amplified. A bold tile, a striking vanity or a feature mirror makes a strong impression. A plain powder room feels like an afterthought.
Design for impact
A powder room is the one room where you can take design risks that would be overwhelming in a larger bathroom. A dark, dramatic tile on every wall. A patterned encaustic floor tile. A marble slab behind the basin. A bold wallpaper above a tile dado.
The room is small, so the material cost of a premium tile or stone is low — you might need only 5 to 8 square metres of tiles. This makes it the most affordable room to finish to a premium standard.
Our colour schemes guide covers palettes that work in small spaces, and our splashback guide shows material options beyond standard tiles.
Compact vanities and basins
A powder room vanity is typically 400 to 600 millimetres wide — much smaller than a bathroom vanity. Wall-hung vanities are the most popular choice because they keep the floor clear and make the room feel bigger.
Basin options include vessel basins (sitting on top of the vanity), under-mount basins (set into the bench) and wall-mounted basins (no vanity at all). A wall-mounted basin frees the most space but offers no storage — fine for a room where only hand wash and a hand towel are needed.
Lighting and mirrors
A powder room often has no window, so lighting is everything. A backlit round mirror creates a warm glow and serves as both a light source and a design feature. A pendant light or a wall sconce beside the mirror adds atmosphere.
Avoid harsh downlights aimed directly at the mirror — they create unflattering shadows. Soft, diffused light at face height is the most flattering and welcoming choice. Our mirror guide covers LED options and sizing.
Toilet selection for a powder room
A wall-hung or back-to-wall toilet is the best choice for a powder room because it hides the cistern and keeps the room uncluttered. In a very small room, every centimetre counts — a concealed cistern saves 150 to 200 millimetres of depth compared to a close coupled toilet.
Our toilet upgrade guide compares all three types with costs and fitting details.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a powder room renovation cost?
A powder room renovation typically costs $8,000 to $15,000 depending on the finishes. The room is small, so even premium tiles and fixtures cost less than they would in a full bathroom. A free on-site measure gives you a fixed-scope quote.
Does a powder room need waterproofing?
The floor area around the toilet and basin must be sealed. There is no shower, so the full wet-area sealing requirements of AS 3740 do not apply to the shower zone. The floor and a strip up the wall behind the toilet and basin are the sealed areas.
What size vanity fits a powder room?
Most powder room vanities are 400 to 600 millimetres wide. A wall-mounted basin with no vanity works in the tightest rooms. If the room is wide enough, a 750-millimetre vanity with a single drawer provides useful storage.
Can I use bold tiles in a powder room?
Yes — the powder room is the best room in the house for bold design choices. The small area means the material cost is low, and the room is used briefly by guests, so a dramatic tile or pattern makes a lasting impression without being overwhelming.
Does a powder room add value to a home?
Yes. A ground-floor powder room is a highly sought-after feature for buyers, especially in homes with bedrooms upstairs. It saves guests from using the family bathroom and adds convenience for daily life.
